A Mix of Suburb and Countryside
Asphalt paving in Inver Grove Heights covers a wider range of jobs than in most south-metro cities. The northern neighborhoods filled in fast in the 1960s and 70s, when the population grew 159 percent and then another 94 percent. Farther south, the rolling countryside west of the Mississippi still has larger lots, long private drives and properties that started with gravel. The city formed in 1965 when the village of Inver Grove and Inver Grove Township merged, and it still carries both characters.
Long driveways and gravel conversions
A long rural driveway is a different project from a two-car suburban one. Water drains across it at several points, the edges have no curb to hold them, and heavier vehicles such as trucks, trailers and farm equipment may use it. Converting gravel to blacktop starts with regrading and compacting the existing stone, adding base where it is thin and shaping ditches or swales so water crosses or runs beside the drive rather than along it.
1960s and 70s neighborhoods
In the older northern neighborhoods, many driveways are on their original base or a single overlay. After fifty Minnesota winters, edges crumble, aprons settle and frost heave leaves humps. Full replacement with a rebuilt base is often the right call. We probe the base first and quote an overlay where it is still sound.
Bluffs and hills
The Pine Bend Bluffs Scientific and Natural Area protects bluff land along the river in the south of the city, and the terrain between there and the northern neighborhoods rolls. Sloped driveways need firm compaction and edges that hold up to runoff. Where a drive climbs, we pay attention to how it meets the garage and the road so water does not pond at either end.
Commercial corridors
U.S. 52, Highway 55, Highway 3 and I-494 all run through the city, and businesses along those corridors and along 80th Street need lots that handle trucks and plows. We patch, crack seal, sealcoat, overlay and restripe.
Old roads, new subdivisions
Inver Grove Heights has some of the oldest road history in Dakota County. The Mendota-Wabasha military road was laid out through the area in 1853, and by 1880 the township had 240 farms. Today newer subdivisions sit between older homesteads and rural roads. That mix means one street can hold a 1960s rambler with a cracked single-car driveway, a 2005 two-story with a wide three-car drive and a farmhouse with a quarter-mile gravel lane. We quote each on its own terms rather than applying one formula.
Where gravel meets pavement
On many rural properties the driveway starts as asphalt near the house and turns to gravel farther out, or the reverse near the road. The joint between the two is where potholes form. When we pave part of a drive, we taper and support the transition so gravel does not get pushed under the asphalt edge.

Inver Grove Heights Questions
Can you pave my long gravel driveway in southern Inver Grove Heights?
Yes. We regrade and compact the existing gravel, add base where needed, plan drainage across and along the drive, and pave. For long drives we often quote by section so you can see where the money goes.
How thick should blacktop be for a driveway that sees trucks?
Published guides suggest 3 to 4 inches of asphalt over 8 to 10 inches of base for heavier vehicles, versus 2 to 3 inches over 6 to 8 for cars. We size it to what actually uses the drive.
Do you handle business lots along Highway 52 and 55?
Yes, including patching, sealing, overlays and restriping, scheduled around your hours.
What does it cost to pave a gravel driveway?
Standard asphalt runs about $5 to $12 or more per square foot in national cost guides. Converting gravel can cost less if the existing stone can be regraded and reused as base. Length, drainage work and thickness decide the final price, which we put in writing.
