Old River Town, Varied Ground
Asphalt paving in Hastings means working in one of the oldest cities in Minnesota. Hastings incorporated in 1857, a year before statehood, and became the Dakota County seat the same year. Its West Second Street Residential Historic District and East Second Street Commercial Historic District hold some of the oldest homes and storefronts in the region, while neighborhoods from the 1950s onward fill out the rest of the city, which grew from 6,560 residents in 1950 to 22,154 in 2020.
Bluffs, falls and floodplain
The Mississippi forms most of the northern border, with bluffs along the river, and the Vermillion River crosses the south side over Vermillion Falls into a gorge. In the northeast corner, a marshy, flood-prone area once called Cow Town sits low by the river. Driveways on bluff lots deal with slope and runoff; driveways in low areas deal with wet ground and slow drainage. Each needs a different base and drainage plan.
Older homes near downtown
In the historic residential areas, driveways are often narrow, lead to detached garages and sit on lots laid out long before cars. Replacement is common, and so is working around mature trees, stone walls and tight access. We size equipment to the space.
Weather on record
The Lock and Dam No. 2 weather station records about 33 inches of precipitation a year over roughly 120 wet days, a record high of 101 and a record low of minus 36. Paving waits for thawed, dry ground, and crack sealing goes in before freeze-up.
Highway approaches
U.S. 61 (Vermillion Street) and Highway 55 run through town, and the new Hastings High Bridge opened in 2013. Driveways that meet state highways may need MnDOT approval at the approach; those on county roads follow Dakota County rules. We check who controls the approach before planning changes there.
Historic homes and detached garages
In the West Second Street Residential Historic District and nearby, many homes were built long before cars, and garages were added later at the back of the lot. Those driveways are often narrow and run close to the house. We keep them sloped away from foundations and size equipment to the access.
Bridges and traffic
The Hastings High Bridge, opened in 2013, replaced a span that itself replaced the famous 1895 spiral bridge. The river crossing funnels regional traffic onto U.S. 61 and Highway 55, so businesses along those routes see heavy daily use. We patch, crack seal, sealcoat, overlay and restripe commercial lots there.
Lakes Rebecca and Isabel
Lakes Rebecca and Isabel both drain to the Mississippi, and homes near them can have wetter soil. Drainage planning and base depth matter more on those lots.

Hastings Questions
We have a narrow driveway to a detached garage near downtown. Can you pave it?
Yes. We plan around tight access, trees and walls, and use smaller equipment where needed.
Our lot is low and the driveway stays wet. What helps?
A deeper, free-draining base and grading that moves water off and away. In some cases a drain or swale is part of the fix.
Does my Vermillion Street driveway need state approval?
Changes to an approach on a state highway may need MnDOT approval. Replacing a driveway within your property usually does not. We confirm before planning approach work.
Can you pave a narrow driveway to a detached garage in the historic district?
Yes. We plan around tight access, protect foundations and walls, and slope the drive away from the house.
When is paving season in Hastings?
Roughly late spring through fall, once frost is out and the base is dry. We schedule around ground temperature and the forecast rather than fixed dates.
